GREAT FINISH FOR FIRST TEAM.
Sunday 28th August and a visit from Hertfordshire for our last fixture of the season at The Millbrook Golf Club.
The sun was shining and the team were in great spirits ahead of our last match, a win against Hertfordshire would secure Bedfordshire a second place finish in the league so all to play for.
Next year’s Captain Scott Armitage and Jon Fox lead the way, in what proved to be another great morning for the team. After slipping behind early on, Scott and Jon soon got to grips with the speed of the fantastic Millbrook greens and eased ahead by the turn, never looking back from there on in, finally winning 5/3.
This year’s skipper Paul Kenna and Jack Hawksby have become a formidable pairing this year and again looked rock solid, even though they were embroiled in a very tight match they always looked like they were going to win and they never let themselves down finishing with a great 2/1 win.
County Champion Ryan Craig and Paul Kitching out at three, a new combination for the foursomes but a great call from the team manager with the pair going on to another great 4/3 win.
So three points on the board could the last pairing of Norman Cilliers and Matt Hill make it four out of four. It certainly did not look like it early on with a few mistakes from our boys and some great golf from the Hertfordshire pair, the lads found themselves five down after five, but unbelievably they produced some fantastic golf to peg their opponents back and managed to secure another half point.
What a great effort and what a morning from the Bedfordshire team leading 3.5-0.5 at lunch.
The afternoon singles got under way with three points needed to secure the win and our second place finish. We knew the Hertfordshire lads would come back strong but we felt sure we could claim at least the three points we needed.
Jon Fox took the honour and in a match where he was behind by a couple for most of it, had a great finish winning seventeen and eighteen and took the first half point.
Jack Hawksby out second, in another very tight match, all square at nine but Jack again changed gear on the back nine and set the early tone with a fine 2/1 win.
Matt Hill at three and after his great come back in the morning made sure he was not going to get into a similar position in the afternoon, Matt took an early lead and never looked back taking a fine 4/3 win.
So two and a half points secured another half would give us the match and it looked like Ryan Craig out at four was going to give us that point ahead for most of his match, but great credit must go to his opponent, who produced another great come back to draw this game.
However, the half for Ryan was enough for The Bedfordshire Team to claim another great win.
Norman Cilliers and Scott Armitage had already lost their games and Paul Kenna managed to take his to the last but he also just lost out.
Which left Paul Kitching out on the course. The last time I had seen Paul he was all square but he finished very strongly winning his match 3/1.
So 4-4 in the singles and an overall win 7.5 – 4.5 and a second place finish in the League.

A fantastic season for the Bedfordshire first team, fifth place at Seacroft and a second in the league. Great credit must go to all who have worn the Bedfordshire badge this year, their professionalism and fighting spirit have pushed us to a place way above what we have achieved for quite a while.
A big thanks to our County president David Hawkins and the ongoing support of the Executive committee.
A massive thank you to Rob Brightman and all the staff and members of The Millbrook Golf Club for hosting our home fixtures on what has been a fantastic course.
Dave Weedon.
