Bedfordshire Schools Handicap Championship
Report on the Bedfordshire Schools Handicap Championships
A first visit to the Luton Hoo golf complex proved to be a successful occasion for Bedfordshire Schools as Luke Baynham (Redborne Upper / The Millbrook GC) took the Boys title, scoring 40 points and looking in good form for the NASUWT SE Schools Championship at the end of May. In a closely fought contest with 3 points separating the top 10 , George Garnham (Wootton Upper / Beds & County GC) was second on countback with 39 pts, ahead of Brandon Waddington (Vandyke Upper / Leighton Buzzard GC) 39 pts. 2016 Champion, Ben Cooley (Sharnbrook Upper / The Bedford GC) and the Redborne Upper / The Millbrook GC pairing of Aiden Abbott and Will Glennister all scored 38 pts. George Skinner and Patrick Elkins-Daye (both Redborne Upper / The Millbrook GC) together with James Wilson (Samuel Whitbread / Chesfield Downs GC) were all one shot further back on 37 pts.
Not surprisingly Redborne Upper won the NASUWT Team Championship as they fought amongst themselves for placements, with 2016 holders Sharnbrook Upper snatching a runners up prize from a cluster of other teams with a couple of points separating the top 6 teams, including Bedford Girls, Vandyke Upper and Wootton Upper. Redborne now go forward to represent Bedfordshire Schools at the National Team Championship in July held at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.
Excellent day and great hospitality from the host venue.
Luke Baynham (Redborne Upper / The Millbrook GC), Luke Charalambous (Harlington Upper / Beadlow Manor GC), Jack Manley (Sharnbrook Upper / Beds & County GC) and Elliot Smith (Mark Rutherford Upper / Beds & County GC) have all been selected for Bedfordshire Schools to play in the NASUWT SE Schools Regional Championship to be held at West Essex GC on the 2nd of June.
