Bedfordshire County Golf

East Region Junior Finals

The venue for 2017 was the Colne Valley Golf Club which is a parkland course with the river Colne in the valley at the bottom. A short course but tricky with deceptive undulating greens. Our team this year was as follows:

Georgia Staroscik from Leighton Buzzard GC Handicap 4
Natasha Yesinkas from Dunstable Downs GC Handicap 7
Imogen Morten-King from Pavenham GC Handicap 11
Chanel Fontaine-Geary from South Beds GC Handicap 11
Caitlin Thomas from John O’Gaunt GC Handicap 12
Jen Tocha from Mount Pleasant GC Handicap 17
Roisin Scanlon from Bedfordshire GC Handicap 20
Jessica Sporle from John O’Gaunt GC Handicap 23

After bad weather the previous week we were lucky with dry sunny days for the competition.
Our first match on Monday afternoon was against Suffolk and we put out all our lowest handicap players who managed a credible half, with Georgia starting as she played all week by winning her match early 5 & 4.

On the Tuesday morning we played Hertfordshire and Jess Sporle played instead of Jen Tocha. We lost 5 and 1 with Georgia winning again 5 & 4. Jess was unlucky as she nearly halve her match it was only the last two holes that let her down.
Tuesday afternoon we played Cambs & Hunts and changed our team by playing Roisin and Jen instead of Natasha and Imogen. Roisin was the youngest and smallest player  as she is only 9 and was playing girls several years older and lower handicaps than herself. We lost 4 1/2 to 1 1/2. A courageous fight by Roisin who lost 2&1, Chanel halved her match and Georgia won by 5&4 again.

On Wednesday morning we played Essex and changed our team by playing Georgia, Natasha, Imogen, Chanel , Jen and Jess. We knew from previous years that Essex can be a strong side. We lost 4 1/2 to 1 1/2. Georgia against was our best player winning 4&2 with Jen halving her match. The handicaps for the Essex players started at 3 handicap to 11 so all our players where playing girls who had lower handicaps, so we were very pleased with Jen’s result.

On Wednesday afternoon we played Norfolk, last year’s winners. Caitlin and Roisin played with Chanel and Jess supporting the team. We lost 4&2 with Georgia winning 7 &6 and Natasha winning 2 & 1.

In the final tables we finished bottom as we only halved one match and lost the others but won more of our individual matches than Cambs & Hunts and Suffolk.

For the future we have a strong team as we only loose Natasha this year as she is 18 but will keep the rest of the team for the next couple of years and Roisin could play for the next eight years. We also had one of the strongest players in Georgia who won all matches.

Next year Junior County Days will be held at Letchworth GC so I hope we will get a lot of local supporters.
