Saturday 3rd May saw Bedfordshire host Hertfordshire and Essex in a triangular match at South Beds Golf Club.

Conditions were very good as the morning foursomes got under way with Gary Munro and Harry Busbridge leading the way for Bedfordshire. A very tight affair it proved to be with no more than the odd shot between all three counties, Beds managed a narrow 2&1 victory over Essex but lost 2&1 to Hertfordshire. The next three matches were no different, with all the matches going to at least the seventeenth hole. Jack Leek and Sam Flannery lost a great fight going down 2&1 to Essex but managed to salvage what was to be our only morning half point from Hertfordshire.

The young pairing of Luke Charnley and Harry Boyle took a great win from Essex again 2&1 and only lost to Herts on the last. Bradley Finch and Reece Blair went down 2&1 in both their matches but fought well.

At lunch we were 2-2 with Essex but 3½ to ½ down to Hertfordshire which seemed a little harsh, but with all the games being so tight there was all to play for in the afternoon.

Again Gary Munro lead the way in the singles and after a slow start a couple of chip ins pulled him right back into both his matches. He finished off Herts on the 16th winning 3&2 and walked on to the 17th dormy 2 up but after a great fight back by Essex in finishing birdie, birdie we took half a point each. Jack Leek followed but never really got going, losing both his games and points were now needed if we were to take anything from either match. Sam Flannery provided two by beating Essex 2&1 and Herts 4&3, followed by another great performance from Bradley Finch in winning 6&5 and 4&3. Next up in his first Colts match was Harry Boyle who took a very creditable 1up victory over Essex but was just beaten by Herts losing just 1 down. Luke Charnley, as usual, never gave in wearing his opponents down on his home course, beating Herts 2&1 and winning his last two holes against Essex to take a half.

At this point a fight back in both matches looked on with the points we had taken but as it turned out we finished just short. Harry Busbridge at number seven managed a half point from Herts but went down 4&3 to Essex and Reece Blair lost 4&3 to both opponents. Bedfordshire battled hard but couldn’t quite take a victory, drawing 6-6 with Essex and losing 7-5 to Hertfordshire.

Putting these two matches into perspective and looking at the last few years’ results for the Colts we cannot be too disappointed. It was a great improvement even if it was a home match. We look forward to the return matches later in the season.

Our thanks go to South Beds for hosting this fixture.

Dave Weedon.

Colts’ Manager.
