A bright but cloudy morning saw us hosting our 3rd league match, at home to a very strong BB&O side, that contained the newly crowned Scottish matchplay Champion Malcolm Reid. John O' Gaunt was in great condition, with tight, running fairways and true greens, as the clouds parted and we teed off with Tim Bevan leading the way.
We knew it was to be a tough match as BB&O had recently beaten Hertfordshire 6 – 4 and had four new members in their already strong team. At the turn we were up in 3 matches, down in 5, with 2 level. A raft of birdies put paid to Ian Chivers in the middle of the back 9 and, although he was 4 up at the turn, John Haines had lost 2 holes quite quickly. Jim Gleasure, Peter Jones and I were all hanging in at 1 down but both Jim and I lost our hard fought matches on 16th.
It was a tight call for match of the day as, although he had only dropped 3 shots, Clive Allen did remarkably well against Malcolm Reid. But the honour goes to Phil White, playing on his home track, coming up 18th with both teams watching from the terrace, he managed to coax home a curly 4 foot put to win 1 up!
Although 8 – 2 seems a bit of a mauling, 5 matches got to 16th and all were tight. With a bit of good fortune we could have picked up another couple of points. I am really pleased and proud of the ability and determination shown by the whole team. We are in a positive mood going to Essex for our last league match and are quietly confident. A win would give us an excellent finish to the season.
Finally, our thanks go to John O'Gaunt for hosting the event and presenting the course in such great condition. There were glowing comments from Rod Crisp and his BB&O team, who thoroughly enjoyed the course and the after match refreshments.
