Match Report
Our first pre-season friendly saw us travel to Thetford golf club. On a lovely sunny day we prepared for a tough match. Norfolk are very strong at home and with the addition of a couple of new, low handicappers, were going to be hard to beat. The greens were in fairly good condition but were slower than they looked, and the fairways were in need of some water, so preferred lies were in place.
Two players made their débuts in this game; Andy Brown from The Bedfordshire and Colin Moody from The Bedford. Both performed well and look like being valuable additions to the squad.
John and Tim led us off and some solid golf all round saw them bring in the first point of the day. We followed this up with three close losses, sending us 3 – 1 down as Les and I left after lunch to start our afternoon round. We were cheered up just as we teed off to learn that we picked up the last two morning points with both debutants opening their senior accounts! Well done to Andy and Colin!
The afternoon fourballs were close in every match, with some great golf being played. As an indication, Les and I were one under gross after eight holes, and one down! Our opponents couldn't be pegged back and closed out our match 2 & 1.
The first two matches swapped morning results with John & Tim going down, whilst Pete & Phil won, with a birdie from Phil on 17th to close out the match. Graham & Jim lost another very close game 2 down, but we didn't have to worry, as the last two pairs of Bill Love & Andy Brown, and Rob Westgate & Colin Moody both picked up good wins, with the last pair winning convincingly.
A drawn match left Norfolk disappointed but we were very pleased. A good team effort that sets us up well for the forthcoming season.
Finally, our thanks to Thetford golf club, for their excellent hospitality and use of their fine course.
