Match report
A sunny but cold day saw the seniors entertain Cambridgeshire at Bedford & County G.C. for our 2nd pre season friendly. This match, although a friendly, contests for The Rhea Cup, kindly donated by Dick New of Cambridgeshire and Peter Dobson of Bedfordshire.
The morning greensomes saw us take a 3 ½ – 2 ½ lead in to lunch. This could have been so much better, as Tim Bevan & Colin Moody in match 2, and Jim Gleasure & Phil White in match 3 were unlucky to only get halves. Charlie Snelling and I got off to a flyer playing some great golf and never looked in trouble, winning 5&4. With Mick Parrett & Rob Westgate bringing in the final point of the morning, I was satisfied with a good if slightly unlucky performance.
After lunch things went downhill rapidly, with only Tim & Colin picking up a half point in the first four matches. Jim & Phil were again unlucky when Phil missed an eight foot putt on 18th to halve their match. The Cambridgeshire Captain was looking pretty cheerful by this point, although we'd heard from out on the course, that our last pair were well up and cruising. So our day all came down to the 5th match, and the last we'd heard, Bill & Les were 3 down standing on 8th tee. The Cambridgeshire Captain and I stood anxiously waiting by 18th green for the outcome, but when they arrived at the green, our boys had already finished the match with a 2&1 victory!
The match was drawn and we agreed that both counties would hold the trophy for 6 months.
Well done to the whole team for a good fighting performance, that gives us a confidence boost going in to our first league match against Essex in a couple of weeks.
Finally, I would like to thank Bedford & County G.C. for kindly hosting the match, providing a first class meal, and the use of a course that was in superb condition for so early in the year.
