Bedfordshire win 8 – 4

Our first friendly of the season saw us entertain Norfolk at The Bedford G.C.

With a rain shower for company, the first group teed off for 9 holes of greensomes. Even with intermittent showers all day (and the odd hailstones) the course, and particularly the greens, stood up extremely well.

At lunch Norfolk were pretty demoralised as we took a 5 ½ – ½ lead into the afternoon round. The rain continued for the majority of the afternoon, with only the occasional break but this didn't affect the quality of the golf from either team. Colin Moody and Tim Bevan kept the impetus going for Bedfordshire with a confident and imposing 4&3 win in the top match. The 2nd pair of Peter Dobson and Peter Jones, ran in to some sparkling golf from the opposition and ran out of steam finally going down 3&2. Our 3rd pair of Rob Westgate and Phil White, kept their unbeaten day going with a convincing 5&4 win, which earned them performance of the day. The 4th match was tight with the home pair of Ian Chivers and I being one down from 5th and unable to peg it back. Some great golf from John Tavener kept their lead and increased it to 2 up at 13th but we pulled it back and won the last with a two putt par to gain a half. The last two pairs of Jim Gleasure and his partner Gordon Cree (making his debut) and Bill Love and Mike Turnock both went down to opponents again playing spectacular golf. Roger Finney in the final match being 2 over when the match finished.

A very encouraging start to our season, and we look forward to continued success.

Finally, a big thank you to The Bedford G.C. For hosting the event. The Norfolk Captain said he had very rarely seen greens presented as well as this, even in high summer. They were both fast and very true, and a great credit to the club.
