Match report
Our 2nd friendly of the season was an away match v Cambridgeshire, played at St Neots G.C. Although a friendly, a trophy (The Rhea Cup) is played for, so there is plenty at stake!
The morning 10 hole greensomes proved to be an up and down affair, with a win from John & Charlie in the top match, followed by three defeats in games 2, 3 and 4! Nothing to worry about though as both Rob Westgate & Mick Parrett and Clive Allen & Les Sharman both picked up wins to leave us all square on 3 – 3 at lunch.
Cambridgeshire play Midland league scoring rules for these matches so, in the afternoon fourballs a win is worth 2 points and 1 for a half. Again, the top pair Charlie & John, produced some fine golf running out comfortable winners 3&2. Our 2nd pair, Peter Jones & Andy Brown, gained a hard fought half for a useful one point. Things seemed to be going well as 3rd pair, Phil White & Mike Turnock also fought hard and ground out a 1up win against the Cambridgeshire Captain. Then Peter Dobson and I contrived to play some pretty average golf, against a pair who between them didn't miss much all day long. Try as we might we couldn't get back into the game after going behind early and ended up losing 4&3. We gained the dubious honour of being the only Bedfordshire pair not to pick up a single point all day! Our 4th pair Rob & Mick, were always in control and although they gave their opponents a sniff towards the end, hung on for a 1up win. The last match was a nip and tuck affair with there never being much in it. Eventually Clive & Les were ground down and lost 2&1.
So the afternoon score stood at 7 – 5 in our favour, and with a 3 – 3 morning score, we took the win and the Cup back to Bedfordshire for another year. Overall score 10 - 8.
My thanks to St Neots, and to Cambridgeshire's Captain Gerald O'Keane for organising the day. I think everyone enjoyed the match which, as usual, was played in an excellent spirit.
Well done to our guys for a sterling performance.
