We lost 7 - 3 to BB&O today at John O' Gaunt, on the Carthagena course. It was in absolutely spectacular condition and you could only blame yourself for any bad shots, as you certainly couldn't blame the course.
John Haines led us off against Tim Whittaker (who, although not selected yet, will play for England very soon!) and, although it sounds a bit of a walloping, Hainsey's last 3 holes were birdie, birdie, par, before losing 7&6 to an opponent who was 5 under gross!! Tim Bevan said that he was given a putting lesson by his opponent Malcolm Reid losing 4&3. Rob was up 3rd and had a tough match against Irish international George Wilson, finally going down 2&1. Then came the performance of the day from Pete Dobson, he played David Niven (No, not the dead actor, even I'd get a half playing him!) another on the edge of England selection and playing off +1. Dobbo hit him with 4 birdies in the first 6 holes, and there was no coming back for him. Pete ended up cruising home 5&4. This was followed up by Andy Brown giving a cracking performance hammering Cliff Pearce, a 3 handicapper and regular in the BB&O team. A great win. Unfortunately, these two great wins proved to be a false dawn, as the next four matches all went BB&O's way. Charlie went down to the short game master David Lane 4&3, I lost to Phil Sewell who kept grinding out pars and the odd birdie, while I kept missing putts, losing 5&4. Pete Jones caught Bob Lander (who hit driver, wedge into the 1st at 380 odd yards) on top form and got no chances, before going down 8&6. Phil White had a good match against David Cromie (yet another scratch golfer) before going down 4&3, and then to cheer us up, Mike Turnock got up early against the BB&O Captain Ashley Brewer and then played steady golf all the way until he closed it out 3&2.
A much better performance than last year's 10 – 0 drubbing. Everyone who comes in plays with confidence, and although it's a loss, confidence for the season is high!
