MATCH  REPORT

Cambridgeshire vs Bedfordshire friendly match away at Gog Magog Golf Club on 25th March 2012.

We arrived at Gog Magog to find a very foggy and cold golf course, and play had to be delayed by 40 minutes to allow for the fog to lift. The foursomes’ pairings selected were a mixture of a couple of proven pairs with the rest more experimental and looking to the season ahead. We were very pleased with the outcome.

Rob Sutton and Ross Jones led the way and were always in control of their match,  running out 6-4 winners. Connor Boyle and Niall Johnston had a tougher time in a very close game, finally losing out on the last. Paul Kenna and Mark Yeomans  got ahead early and never looked back romping to a convincing 7-5 win. Veteran Paul Kirkwood was partnered with debutant Jack Leek against a strong Cambridgeshire pair, and a close front nine followed before the Bedfordshire pair arrived at the 16th tee 2 up. Paul struck a solid tee shot just short of the fairway bunkers before Jack pulled his second left of the green and under a small tree. Paul,  from a kneeling position, managed a great shot to get the ball out and across the green into a hollow.  Jack then chipped in for a par which gave them a 3 & 2 win.  Matt Hill and Blane Breheny had a really tough game and looked favourites on the 17th before the Cambridgeshire pairing made a stunning up and down on the last green for a hard fought half.

The afternoon singles began with Bedfordshire having a 3½ -1½ lead so we were prepared for a strong start from the home team but Rob Sutton did a great job taking a 3-1 win and pushing the early momentum our way. Ross Jones then followed that up with a great half,  after being 3 down with 3 to play, showing  great belief and Niall Johnston put in another solid performance with a 2-1 win.  Connor Boyle lost on the last to a birdie, but Paul Kenna pulled of another great finish when after being 2 down  with three to play he famously won the last three holes to take another point. Mark Yeomans and Paul Kirkwood both lost out before the strong tail of an impressive Jack Leek, Blane Breheny and Matt Hill all won to give Bedfordshire a very commendable 10 -5 win.

It was a great performance from Bedfordshire, with all the players showing great attitude and team spirit. Thanks to our hosts and friends from Cambridgeshire for a good fixture.
