Essex v Bedfordshire
At Orsett GC.
Bedfordshire Seniors travelled to Orsett Golf Club on Tuesday 21st August to play Essex Seniors
in our second league match of the season the first being against Herts at Moor Park way back in
May.
Orsett is an excellent James Braid designed heathland course and conditions were excellent on
the day. Essex fielded pretty much their strongest side and although Bedfordshire put up a strong
fight it was not enough to stop Essex running out 6.5 to 3.5 winners.
Richard Harris was leading after 10 but 3 successive birdies from his opponent Mark Whiten
turned the game in Essex’s favour finishing 3and 1, Mark Stokes had a terrific win against former
Orsett club champion Steve Rooney 1 up and Peter Mott was under par in his halved match with
Mike Partridge.
Andy Brown and John Haines got hammered 7/6 by the experienced Mark Stones and Tony
Wheals respectively with some excellent golf played by both. Dave Banwell fought very hard
against another strong Essex player in Ian Moore only to come undone in the final three holes
eventually losing 2/1.
Bernie Bone playing in his first County league game put in a terrific performance beatingJohn
Moody 1 up then Steve Kavanagh fresh from refereeing on the European Tour in Russia halved his
match with Jeff Mathewson, as did Chris Smith who showed all of his tenacity coming back from
3 down against Martin Lewis and almost winning on the last with an excellent birdie attempt that
stopped agonisingly on the edge of the hole. Finally Simon Hollands went down 5/4 to Chris
Aukett in the anchor leg.
We have two more league matches to come on Wednesday 29th against BB&O and Monday 3rd
September against Middlesex, both games at Bedfordshire Golf Club where we hope to pick up at
least one victory.
The matches against Herts and Essex have been very close with several games halving on the
final hole which could quite easily have gone in our favour, with our squad getting stronger all the
time and with Colin Beard, Phil Sutton, Ian Chivers and Colin Moody still to come in we have
every reason to be optimistic about the upcoming matches.
