The BUT Trophy 2012.

After the final practice round on Tuesday the Bedfordshire U18’s team were as ready as they could be for the challenge of Norfolk and Leicestershire at John O’Gaunt golf club to compete for the BUT Trophy in Bedfordshire.

Our president Clive Allen duly got the competition under way with the Bedfordshire boys getting off to a steady start in the foursomes. We always felt we could hold our own against Norfolk but knew Leicestershire would be a tough test especially as they also had come down for an earlier practice round.

The front nine was reasonably tight all round but as the groups moved through the back momentum seemed to be on our side moving ahead in four of the five games and as the games finished we were more than happy with the outcome.

The Bedfordshire boys had managed to secure a 4-1 win over both the opponent’s taking 8 points out of a possible 10. This was a great start and proved that all our hard work in foursomes had paid off.

With Leicestershire and Norfolk finishing tied against each other and gaining one point off us we started the afternoon singles with 8 points, both Leicestershire and Norfolk on 3.5 each so we would take a nice lead into the singles a lead that we thoroughly deserved.

We knew that our opponents would come out fighting and that the afternoon would be a lot tougher. A much improved Craig Lefcovitch  led the way for Bedfordshire and never looked back winning both of his matches. Most of the other games proved a lot harder and with Leicestershire rapidly gaining points from us and Norfolk we knew that things were becoming much closer. Jack Turner eased the pressure slightly with another win over both of his opponents, a great performance after a broken wrist earlier in the year had hampered his preparation.

But again Leicestershire seemed to be winning the majority of points, both myself and Clive were trying to keep track of the score which is not easy with the three games going on together in one match. As the games ended and the scores came in it was neck and neck between us and Leicestershire and  with two games left  on the course we knew we were struggling to hang on. Both Harry Noton and Jack Leek in the last two games put up a great fight but in the end we fell just short by 1 point

Final scores

Leicestershire 18 points

Bedfordshire   17 points

Norfolk           10 points

Although disappointed not to win the team should take great credit in their performance, playing a major role in a great competition. Our thanks go to John O’Gaunt golf club for all their help in hosting this tournament for us.

We look forward to the next year’s competition in Norfolk.

Dave Weedon. Team Manager.
