Bedfordshire travelled to Sudbury Golf Club for their third league fixture of the season against Middlesex.
After heavy overnight rain the course was very wet, but playable with the greens still rolling well. The rain had stopped leaving reasonable conditions as we teed off.
As the groups passed through the ninth Bedfordshire were up in one and down in three but only by a single hole so all games were still up for grabs. As the games progressed, however, it was the Middlesex lads that holed the putts which made the difference. We came in for lunch a disappointing 3½ – ½ down with only Rob Sutton and Gavin Samuels managing to take anything from the morning.
The belief within the team was still strong as we discussed the approach for the afternoon singles. With the rain still holding off all the Bedfordshire lads got off to a good start, especially Matt Hill who holed from 108 yards on the second to go two up after two.
Again over the front nine the majority of the lads were well in touch. Then the very heavy rain showers started and as they did it looked at one point that we would be unable to finish due to flooded greens, but with the help of our President, Clive Allen, as head green/squeegee man we managed to get the lads round. At one point we were up in five matches but only by a single hole, and the thought of a remarkable result was still meandering around my head, but as the rounds came to an end so did our chances of snatching anything. The Middlesex lads fought hard for their first win of the season.
Gavin took a hard fought half after being two down with three to play and Rob played extremely well to win two up. Great credit must go to Gary Munro winning his singles two up on his debut for the first team but the better team won on the day 9-3. However, I do believe that we played better than the final result showed. We look forward to the County Qualifier next Saturday at Crowborough Beacon.
