On Friday June 11th, the Seniors played their 3rd league match and 1st one at home, our opponents were Middlesex the other small County in our group and the one we always have a friendly, close but competitive match against and this was no exception. The match was played at Bedfordshire Golf Club which was presented in excellent condition for us so thank you to all there for not only the course condition but hospitality and splendid food served.
First our for Bedfordshire was Phil Sutton who gained a hard fought half, Dickie Harris found himself down early due to a flying start by Nick Clarke and was never able to get back on level terms before finally going down 2&1, Tracy White in only his 2nd League outing recorded a very good 3&2 win from trap 3, the injured Alan Kirby was not at his best and shook hands (or most probably fist pumped) on the 16th green. With new boy Carmine Di Salvo having an off day and opting to avoid the long walk down 14 it was down to our new resident tail gunner Dave (Banners) Banwell to keep us in touch, on his favourite course he didn’t disappoint with a 7&5 win. With Paul Sennett and myself both recording 3&2 wins in matches 6 & 7 Bedfordshire held a narrow lead with 2 matches still on the course. Both Dave Marshall and Smudger found themselves 1 down on the 18th tee and unfortunately in chasing the win required they both sadly lost the final hole to suffer 2 down defeats. A very competitive and exciting match played in the expected spirit ended in the narrowest of defeats for the County, congratulations to Middlesex who now have 2 wins from their opening 2 matches. We now move onto the Regional Foursomes in early July at Gog Magog.
