Bedfordshire's last league match of the season was away to BB&O at Woburn Golf and Country Club on Sunday 22nd August 2010.
In superb conditions for golf and at a wonderful golf course, Bedfordshire needed to win to have an excellent chance of winning the league. This has not been achieved since 2003 and, considering that this team has only been together for this season, it shows great progress for such a young side.
The morning foursomes were played on the Dukes Course and were very close, with BB&O eventually winning 3-1. Craig Nield and Darren Close were our only successful partnership, but Charlie O'Brien and Andy Taylor were extremely unlucky to lose on the last. As we know to our cost over the years it is an uphill task if we lose the foursomes and so it proved.
The singles were played on the Duchess Course and Niall Johnston gave us a great start by winning the top match, but only the dependable Paul Kirkwood managed a half from the next five matches, which was disappointing, although Craig Nield played really well and could consider himself a little unlucky. At the back Charlie O'Brien won yet again, and our anchorman Rob Sutton proved once more what a strong player he is winning 5/3.
BB&O won the singles 4 ½ - 3 ½ and deserved their overall win by 7 ½ - 4 ½,
The match was played in great spirit and my thanks go to all the supporters from both teams who made it such a great atmosphere. Particular thanks must go to the Woburn Golf Club for their fantastic hospitality and the quality of the courses.
Although it is disappointing to lose, the whole squad has performed way beyond expectations this year, and when days like Sunday come again, we will have benefited from the experience and be able to cope better with the situation, and hopefully next time come out on top.
