Our first friendly of the season against Cambrideshire saw us visiting St Ives Golf Club which is a relatively new inland links.

Bedfordshire were keen to get going against a very strong Cambridgeshire side, and the foursomes got under way in cold and windy conditions.Gary Munro and Matt Hill took the number one slot for Bedfordshire in a game that ebbed and flowed until the final stages where, unfortunately, the Cambridgeshire lads managed to grab the point winning 2-1.Alex Bithrey and Jack leek went out at number two and always looked in control of their game, a tidy performance of very few mistakes took them to a fine 2-1 win.Paul Kitching and Scott Armitage went next and were always up against it, going three down after four.  A good battling performance saw them fight back over the back nine but finally they ran out of steam, going down by two holes.Harry Busbridge and Luke Charnley went out last against a very strong Cambridgeshire pair, they started well but the experience of their opponents proved too strong, finally going down 4-3.

At lunch we were 3-1 down but the mood within the team was very positive and everyone felt we could still take something from the game.

Bedfordshire match play champion Alex Bithrey led the way with a very strong performance winning 4-3. Matt Hill at number two also played very well, always in front and finally winning two up. Gary Munro at three also excelled taking his game 3-2. This was exactly the start Bedfordshire needed but four in a row was just beyond us with the new addition to our squad Scott Armitage, a past Cambridgeshire player, going down 3-2 to our opponents’ captain, Owen Davies.

However match five saw us back in the points with Jack Leek’s near perfect performance winning 4-3. Harry Busbridge got off to a flier in game six starting eagle, birdie, par, birdie thus putting his opponent under pressure from the start, this pressure was relentless and Harry had the biggest win of the day 5-3. Luke Charnley in game seven never really got going and was always chasing his game. He battled hard but lost out 4-3. Last out, Paul Kitching had a great match with only one shot in it most of the game, then on fifteen and sixteen Owen Cousins holed two long putts to take a one shot lead with two to play. At this point they were the only pair left out on the course, with Bedfordshire 6-5 up, so all to play for, but at the eighteenth Cambridgeshire nicked the point to take a draw in the match.

A great performance overall from the Bedfordshire team. Their determination and desire not to lose will hold us in good stead for the season ahead.

Dave Weedon.

Team Manager.
