BUT Trophy Success - Again

BUT TROPHY

Market Harborough Golf Club - 12th April 2017

The BUT Trophy is an annual event played between teams of ten U18 golfers from Bedfordshire, Norfolk and Leicestershire & Rutland. This year the weather was cold and windy but the course was in excellent condition and only surpassed by the fine display of golf and team spirit that the lads from Bedfordshire gave.

We were level on points with Norfolk after the morning foursomes and went into the singles feeling confident but always mindful that Norfolk was fielding a strong team. However, the strength of our own team was to be the deciding factor. Every Bedfordshire player scored at least one point in the afternoon singles and the team took 16 out of the 20 points that were available. There were many special individual performances on the day but the best performance of all was the team performance. This group of young men has shown that a lot can done on limited resources if there is an appetite to win and a pride in the team and what it represents. Deeserved congratulations to them all.

In my excitement at the end of the day, I forgot to take a team photo but we do have one of them at the dinner table.

Left side, front to back: Luke Baynham, Ryan Smith (Capt), Luke Charalmabous, Joel Gosling & Jamie Gibbons.

Right side, front to back: George Garnham, Jack Manley, Matthew Green, Alex Zavodov & Elliot Smith.

My thanks to Tim Bevan (Team Manager), David Hawkins (President), Les Tucker (Vice-President) and David Weedon (Director of Golf) for having been present on the day and for the support that they give to junior golf which is much appreciated.

The event will be held in Bedfordshire next year when we will be seeking a fifth consecutive victory.

Martin McDermott
BCGU-Junior Manager
