Bedfordshire Schools regain the McPartlin Trophy
Nearly every 4th Year, it seems almost as regular as the Olympics, Bedfordshire win the George McPartlin Trophy 2002 / 2005 / 2011 / 2013 / 2017, otherwise there has been a distinct Hertfordshire dominance since 2000. This year saw an exciting win for Bedfordshire Schools against Hertfordshire, Essex and Middlesex Schools as teams of 6 Boys and 3 Girls competed for the Trophy, on a stableford format, at Mill Green GC, Welwyn. Hertfordshire (276 pts), were beaten back into 3rd place this year by Essex (277 pts) and Bedfordshire’s record scoring (295). With 2 discard scores allowed, BSGA came from behind to take the trophy with an outstanding 49 pts from Patrick Elkins-Daye(18 hcp)(The Millbrook GC and Redborne Upper), that included a back 9 gross 34, keeping a 5 off his card (six 4’s and three 3’s, including a 5 point eagle!)
Hertfordshire started strongly with 41pts, 38, 47, 37 with Bedfordshire lagging behind on 37, 36, 34, 33. Then came a flurry of 40+ point scores for Bedfordshire as young Connor Tallentire (The Bedford GC and Holywell Middle) 42 pts, Patrick Elkins-Daye 49 pts, Roisin Scanlon (Bedfordshire GC and Bedford Girls) 44 pts, Emma Brown (John O’Gaunt GC and Bedford Girls) 43 pts and Harry Lake (Beadlow Manor GC and Alameda Middle) 44 pts sealed the win. Brandon Waddington (Leighton Buzzard GC and Vandyke Upper) (37 pts) ably captained the side, encouraging the younger players home and receiving the trophy afterwards.
Other team players were Jenifer Tocha (Mount Pleasant GC and Samuel Whitbread Academy) 33 pts, James Wilson (Chesfield Downs GC and Samuel Whitbread Academy) 36 pts and Leo Soe (Stockwood Park GC and Queensbury Academy) 34 pts. Middlesex came 4th with 260 pts and the quality of the golf was reflected by 12 out of the 36 players had scores of 40 or more points on the day. This was the youngest ever Bedfordshire Schools team selected for this event with 3 players that have emerged from the Rookie beginner event in recent years playing.
