Beds v Herts at Hadley Wood.

Sunday 28th May and the first team make the short journey to play Hertfordshire at Hadley Wood Golf Club in our first league match of the season.

The course looked fantastic, with the sun shining and no real wind, so pretty much perfect conditions.

The morning foursomes started with the formidable pairing of Jack Hawksby and Paul Kenna leading the way for Bedfordshire.

This match produced some great golf from both pairs with hardly anything to separate them, the match inevitably went to the last hole, with our lads 1 down, Jacks long tee shot found the right trees but a chip sideways then a great up and down was enough to make four and win the hole.

A great and well deserved half point.

Paul Kirkwood and Ryan Craig out second in another very good match. The Beds lads took the early advantage but on the back nine the Hertfordshire pair struck back with a flurry of birdies.

Once again one down going up the last and our boys showed the composure to win the last and half the match, another well-earned half point.

Team captain Scott Armitage and Harry Boyle out third and although falling behind early on they always looked like they were not going to lose.

Into the back nine and they really started to take control with a great display of foursomes golf progressing to a very creditable 3/1 win.

Norman Cilliers and Ryan Craig out at the back and although striking the ball well they could not keep up with their opponents on the greens so the Bedfordshire pair were always chasing the match and finally lost 6/5.

Happy at lunch though 2-2 and again staying in touch after the morning foursomes, with showers forecast in the afternoon lots could happen on the slick greens.

Paul Kirkwood out first for Bedfordshire with the team looking for a fast start, Paul found himself 3 down after 7 but managed as usual to really dig deep, but could not reduce the deficit, finally losing on seventeen 3/1.

Jack Hawksby out second, Jack is at the top of his game at the moment and this showed, his powerful ball striking and tight iron play put his opponent under immense pressure, which he could not handle, Jack winning comfortably 6/5.

Ryan Smith out at three and after a bit of a slow start Ryan found the sort of form he was in last year winning his match 4/3 and again producing some fantastic golf.

At this point all the matches had passed through the twelfth hole with things looking good, I thought we had a reasonable chance of taking something from the match. These thoughts were soon dashed with the Hertfordshire lads hitting back with their share of great golf.

Paul Kenna out at four lost out 4/3, Ryan Craig out at five lost 2/1 and Scott out at six lost 3/2 so with two matches left on course the best we could do was a 6-6 draw but it was not to be, both Norman out at seven and Harry at eight went down 2/1 so a 6-2 defeat in the singles.

A heavy defeat but with five of the matches going to the seventeenth hole it could have been a lot closer, full credit must go to both teams, the standard of golf was exceptional the Hertfordshire lads managed to produce the shots on the last few holes that made the difference.

8-4 not the start to the season we were looking for but sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say well done to your opponents.

We look forward to hosting B,B & O AT The Millbrook on July 2nd.
