An outstanding performance from Vandyke Upper School at Woodhall Spa clinched the 2018 NASUWT England Schools Team Championship title by 3 clear points from Gravesend GS, Kent. Leading the way were Ed Stephenson (38 pts) and Andres Valentine (38 pts) with Brandon Waddington (30 pts) making the discard contribution as part of the team. All 3 players are Leighton Buzzard GC juniors, with Ed finishing 2nd overall and Andres 3rd on countback, both 2 points behind the individual leader. Vandyke had qualified to represent Bedfordshire as County Schools Scratch Champions. Consistent scoring by all three boys proved to be crucial in difficult, firm ground conditions and hot weather. Six birdies ( 4 for Ed and 2 for Andres) including one for Andres at the last brought the trophy home after a long wait as they were amongst the early starters.
Bedfordshire Schools other win came in 2012 when Bedford Modern won the title as Vandyke became the 18th National Schools title holders over 35 other County Champion teams. Bedfordshire are only the third County to take the title more than once since the event started 2005.
