Stuart Goode Trophy 2022

Tuesday 22nd March 2022

A fantastic performance from Junior Alex Robins saw him win all 3 of his leading games against the legendry Phil Sutton, First team player Scott Armitage and Colts Joe Kirby. First Team Skipper Rob Brightman led the way for the First Team with 3 wins before Colts Matt Green brought 3 points home. Carmine De Silva gave a late showing for the Seniors with a full house, and plaudits must go to Junior Harry Lake for a never say die 3 halves. However it all came down to the last match where the ever improving Aidan Abbott brought home 2.5 points for the Colts as did the ever reliable Paul Kitching. The result being First & Colts drawing 13.5 each, closely followed by the Seniors and Juniors. Pictured below skippers Rob Brightman & Ollie Bryant.

Two Bedfordshire Professionals make Golf Monthly Top 50 Coaches

Top 50 Golf Coaches: Meet The UK's Best

Gary Munro

Location: Pitch Golf London & Bedfordshire Golf Club

Gary is Director Of Golf at Pitch London. He is involved in the launch of the next Pitch site in Soho, which will open up the game to all levels. He is a big believer in equality and showcasing how fun golf can be for everyone. Gary has also coached at county level, and as County Manager has overseen a number of league wins for the U18s (Bedfordshire).

Teaching philosophy:

I don’t have a set model of swing that I coach and force on people - but impact and ball flight are everything, so I work it back from this. What impact characteristics does this player need to hit the shots and shoot the best score?

Advice for practice:

Split your practice into three sections: technical practice, skill practice (working on hitting different shots, for example, high, medium, low shots and shaping the ball) and finally pressure practice.

Students learn best when…

They self-discover. I don’t believe in coaches jumping on a player shot by shot giving more and more conflicting information, which can become confusing. I like my players to learn about their tendencies. I ask questions, allowing them to learn when they move well and why it’s good. I do the same for bad shots and ask them what they think caused that. Let them self-evaluate an answer so they develop the skill.

Adrienne Engleman

Location: Colmworth GC

Adrienne has playing and coaching professionally for over 30 years and she is now a PGA Fellow Professional which puts her in the top one per cent of PGA Members who has been accorded that status. She previously played on the Ladies European Tour for over a decade.

Greatest teacher:

As an amateur - and then as a player on the LET - I was taught to play (better) golf by the likes of Mickey Walker, Denis Pugh, Luther Blacklock and David Leadbetter. However, when I was an assistant PGA professional - learning my trade as a golf teacher - my first head PGA professional was (and still is) simply the greatest teacher I have ever known.

Jimmy was enthusiastic, engaging and enlightening, and his widespread know-how of golf and golf instruction - and how to connect with and truly inspire his students - was second to none. Jimmy would captivate his audience with ease and at that time his contemporary growth mindset was utterly infectious. I am deeply indebted to Jimmy for his help with my professional development and for his support in my becoming the impassioned golf teacher I am today.

Most common impact fault:

Incorrect weight distribution (i.e. leaning back through impact). So, I simply place a (model makers) matchstick in front of the golf ball and ask my students to ‘strike’ the match… and it works like a dream!)

Greatest teaching story:

John Willis, the founder and CEO of Power2Inspire, was born without fully formed arms and legs. As a 'direct result' (John’s words, not mine!) of engaging in lessons with me - John is now striking the golf ball 100+ yards and is regularly enjoying playing the game at his local Par 3 course.
