Seniors get Season of to a Winning Start

The Seniors kicked off the season along with the County 1st Team, Colts and Juniors playing for the Stuart Goode Trophy at Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands GC, a report has been done by the County so I’ll just say it was a very competitive days golf with all four teams in with a chance of victory up to the final matches, and as always for those taking part it was a pleasure and honour to be there and remembering someone who did so much for our County.

We then travelled to Swaffham to play Norfolk on March 28th, well some of us did, we now all know why our Senior player and 1st Team Manager works at a test track where you just go round with no exits as he’s proved to be unsafe on the open roads. In short Tracey White stayed in Swaffham the night before then drove for 25 minutes to Fakenham only to ring me to advise he would be late arriving at Swaffham GC some 5 minutes from his original start point. When we finally did assemble a team at the correct Course an enjoyable day was had by all in good company with a competitive 27 holes of foursomes and singles match play resulting in a 8-7 win for Bedfordshire secured by the final match on the 18th green.

Our next match was on April 29th v Cambridgeshire for the well known and highly prestigious Rhea Trophy for which our hosts took us to Cambridgeshire GC at Bar Hill which involves negotiating the very new Tarmac maze adjacent to the course and A14. Our friends from Cambridgeshire were as always excellent hosts and once assembled we settled into a day of excellent golf. Following the 1st outings for us as Aspley Guise by Ian Farrant (Dunstable) and Andy Lay (Bedfordshire) at Swaffham I was able to introduce another 2 County Senior Virgins in Cameron Large (JOG) and Tony Crockford (Wyboston) The morning session went very well for us with the 6 matches of greensomes played over 9 holes resulting in Bedfordshire holding a 4.5 – 1.5 lead and following lunch we returned to the course in the same pairings to play 18 holes of fourball better ball. Having reminded the team that the afternoon matches were for double points so a 3 point lead could be easily eroded I soon realised I had no need for concern, all hand signals across the course appeared to by thumbs up and following some excellent golf by all concerned we finally gathered on the balcony, and as if on a recorded loop the answer I was getting to “how did you finish” was “we won” a remarkable 5 wins and a half from the 6 matches resulting in an overall win by 15.5 – 2.5. So we not only retained the Rhea Trophy but in it’s short history for the first time it was won outright in consecutive years by the same County.

Thanks to all who have represented the Seniors so far this season and we now move onto our first League fixture which will be a tough one I’m sure when we take on BB&O at Denham GC on Monday 9th May.
