Sunday 31st August saw Bedfordshire take on Middlesex at West Middlesex Golf Club in the last fixture of what has been a very tough season for the team.

The morning foursomes teed off in near perfect conditions on a tricky and tactical golf course. Matt Hill and Jack Leek took the number one slot for Bedfordshire in the closest of the matches. After an early exchange on the first few holes the match was very tight being all square up to the seventeenth then course knowledge came into play, with Jon Baker from Middlesex taking what seemed to be a very strange line on this par five, as the lads approached their golf balls it was clear to see that the Middlesex ball was some 60 yards ahead of ours, enabling them to reach the green in two and win the hole with a solid birdie. They sealed the 2up win with another birdie on eighteen.

The other three foursome matches all struggled, well beaten by a very well prepared Middlesex side. The course proved a great choice for home advantage.

So 4-0 down at lunch and major disappointment for all involved, but as always the Bedfordshire lads approached the singles with great professionalism. Matt Hill led the way, in a very good match to watch, with both players producing very good golf and as the match progressed nothing was going to separate the two players and a half was a very fair result.

Gary Munro at two in his last game for Bedfordshire before turning professional produced a very solid performance winning 3-1. Jack Leek at three who has been very hard to beat this year continued to produce solid golf again taking a half from Middlesex. Scott Armitage at four never really got into his game after his opponent produced an electric first six holes finally losing 5-4. Paul Kitching, who the day before had won his Club Championships, went at five and just could not get his nose in front finally losing on the last.

Harry Boyle at six looked and played like he has been playing county first team golf for years, a very mature performance took him to a 3-1 win. Jack Hawksby at seven, another youngster who has had some great singles results this year, could not get close to his opponent this time losing 5-4. At eight Reece Blair, out against the Host Clubs manager, fell behind early and was four down at the turn however a great fight back got him to two down with two to play and a great up and down on seventeen took him to one down with one to play. A wonderful tee shot from Reece put him in a super position but he could not find the birdie he needed to nick what would have been a great half.

My thanks go to all players who have represented Bedfordshire this season and for all their efforts

Dave Weedon. First Team Manager.
