The Bedford Golf Club hosted the annual friendly match against Cambridgeshire which took place in ideal conditions on Sunday 27th March 2011.

This contest is always keenly fought by both sides in an excellent sporting manner, last year resulted in a draw at Gog Magog, and this year ended with Bedfordshire winning 8-7 another very close match. It was an opportunity to try out some new players to Bedfordshire in Paul Kenna from Dunstable Downs and Miguel Moitas from South Beds, as well as four Colts who were making their first team debut. All of them performed extremely well.

The morning foursomes were won 3 ½ to 1 ½ in an excellent performance from all the team. It is always important to win the foursomes so a lot of our coaching has concentrated on this area, and with a very young and inexperienced team it was vital we went into the afternoon with a lead. The singles were very tight for most of the afternoon, but wins from Paul Kenna, Gavin Samuels, Chris Spooner, and Robert Sutton ensured we would halve the match, which left young Connor Boyle the only player left on the course who could get us the half we needed to ensure an overall win.

Connor was one down with two to play against a very experienced Jody Greenall and managed to win the difficult seventeenth hole with a par three, both players hit good drives down the last, and with Connor playing first he hit a great shot to five feet, with Jody doing likewise. Jody then made an excellent birdie leaving Connor his putt to win the match for Bedfordshire which he duly did, a fantastic finish and a great team performance.

My thanks to everyone who came to support the team, and to the Bedford Golf Club, who, as always looked after us superbly, the coursework recently carried out has really improved the course and the greens as usual were very good indeed. Our next match is a friendly against Northamptonshire at Kettering on April 10th where we look forward to another good performance. Philip Corke, County Captain.
