Bedfordshire travelled to Cold Ashby golf Club on Sunday 12th April to play Northamptonshire in our second friendly of the season.

In very cold and windy conditions the lads knew they were going to be in for a very tough day and not knowing the course was also not helping our cause with the first five holes being very tricky if you have never seen them before. However the newly formed and very strong pairing of Bradley Finch and Norman Cilliers put all this to one side and won comfortably 5/4 against the Northants top pair.

Scott Armitage and Paul Kitching fought very hard to gain a very good half after being behind early on. The point and a half was all that we were going to get in the foursomes with both Matt Hill and Tom Mead on his first team debut and Reece Blair and Sam Flannery losing heavily.

So 2.5 -1.5 down at lunch and with the wind gaining in strength it was touch and go whether the afternoon singles would go the full distance as the balls were being blown around on the greens but full credit to both sides as they continued to play in, what at times was ridiculous wind, with Northants seemingly able to handle the conditions and very unpredictable greens.

Bradley Finch was first out and took an early lead but could not hold on finally losing 3/2, Norman Cilliers out second managed a great win taking his match 3/2. Matt Hill at three stayed in his match right until the last but unfortunately lost out on the final hole.

Thomas Mead at four took a great point beating his opponent 3/1, great credit to Tom, his first match for the men’s team and his first point. Tom never looked out of place and will be a great addition to the squad.

However that’s where the Bedfordshire points ended, with Sam, Paul, Reece and Scott all losing out, so quiet a heavy defeat 8.5-3.5

Even so, I believe we look in a much better position at this point than we did last year, we have some strong foursomes pairings and the whole squad are keen to do well.

We look forward to our first league match v Middx on May 10th at the Millbrook and to the season ahead.
