First team lose out to Cambridgeshire

On Sunday 20th March the first team travelled to Ely City Golf Club for our eagerly awaited first friendly of the season against Cambridgeshire.
In the past few seasons this has always been a close contest, Cambridgeshire this year fielded possibly their strongest side so a tough test lay ahead.

In the morning foursomes, Matt Hill and Micheal Round led the way for Bedfordshire in a very tight contest, taking the match all the way to the last. One down with one to play the battle was on to try and nick a half but the Cambridgeshire pair played a solid last hole to take the first point. Jack Leek and new cap Adam Wraight were out second, and the Millbrook pair played some solid golf with very few mistakes and went on to a very creditable 3/2 win levelling the match overall.

Jack Hawksby and Sam Flannery were out third, but never quite got to grips with their opponents and were always chasing their match before going down 4/3.

Last out Norman Cilliers and another new cap Curtis Sage-Passant started well with Curtis holing some important putts to settle his nerves, but the Cambs pairing pulled away on the back nine winning 3/2 overall.

So in to lunch 3-1 down and to be honest not too disappointed, as after talking to the Cambridgeshire Manager this was their fourth friendly and as I mentioned a very strong side. With this being our first game and looking at a couple of new players and pairings the performance was more than acceptable.

The aim for the afternoon singles was to try to at least match our opponents and see what we could claw back.
Last year’s order of merit winner Jack Leek took the number one slot in a very good match, toe to toe over the front nine and nothing in it.
However, Jack fell behind early in the back nine finally arriving on the seventeenth tee two down, a great birdie followed to steal one back and another chip in birdie on the last to take a very good half point. Jack Hawksby out second never really found his touch and was always behind finally losing 5/4. Curtis out third against a past Cambridgeshire captain produced some good golf early on but as the match progressed struggled off the tee slightly and for this he paid the price losing 2/1. Sam out next and another match that contained some very good golf from both players all the way to the last and in the end they could not be separated another half. Micheal Round at number five was always behind after some bad luck on the first he never really managed to get into his stride and was comfortably beaten 6/4.
The match now lost we looked at the strong tail to reduce the deficit and they didn’t let us down.

Matt at number six and another match that could have gone either way, a match that went the distance without an outright winner another half. Adam at seven after a win in his foursomes went out with great confidence and this showed, ahead early and never really looked in any sort of trouble won comfortably 5/4. A great debut for Adam.

Last out Norman and this also looked like it was going to be a close affair with only one hole between them at any one time and back to all square after the sixteenth, but Norman kept his cool to win seventeen and eighteen for a two up win.

Final score 4.5 – 3.5 to Cambridgeshire in the afternoon and a 7.5-4.5 win overall.
Again not too much disappointment, two singles matches we were out played in if we could have pulled the three half’s our way it would have looked a lot better but for our first competitive game of the season we have a lot to take away from the fixture.
We look forward to hosting Northamptonshire at The Millbrook on April the 9th.
