GREAT WIN FOR COUNTY FIRST TEAM.

Sunday 3rd of June and the Bedfordshire first team hosted league favourites Essex at The Millbrook Golf Club.

With one draw and one loss so far in the league, we had to win this one if we were to have any chance of bettering our fourth place finish last year and the team were all raring to go in perfect golfing conditions.

Norman Cilliers and Matt Hill took the tough opening slot for Bedfordshire and did not disappoint, in one of many matches that went to the last hole, but the strong Essex pairing held their nerve to hang on to a tight one up win.

Paul Kenna and Jack Hawksby are now looking a very comfortable pairing and they soon evened things up again on the last this time with Jack holing out from 20 feet to level things up.

Match three and the young pairing of Ryan Craig and Ryan Smith, once again they produced some stunning golf to take their match to the last and again they managed to gain another one up win.

Scott Armitage and Harry Boyle in match four always looked like they would run out winners and sure enough wrapped things up on the 15th with a fine 4/3 win.

So a great morning for Bedfordshire 3-1 up in the foursomes and in a strong position for the afternoon singles, a great effort.

We knew Essex would come out strong but our team are now used to these sort of high pressure situations and we felt we were able to compete in every match.

Jack Hawksby took the number one slot, this turned into a great match with Jack two down at the turn and looking like the match may slip away, however he seemed to change gear and produced some fantastic golf to get back to one up with two to play, but Mitchel Snarling from Essex had not finished and he made two great birdies on seventeen and eighteen to win the match on the last.

Norman out second in another very tight affair, but he always looked in control with his opponent having to come up with some amazing up and downs just to stay in the match. Norman then stamped his authority on the match with a hole in one on the seventh, he continued to set the pace finally winning two up, a great win.

Ryan Smith at three and again a match that went to the last with Essex grabbing the point, with Ryan Craig also losing 3/2 things were starting to look like Essex were staging a great fight back.

Matt Hill out at five needed to steady the ship but with Matt two down with three to play things were not looking great, but Matt, along with the rest of the lads, never give up and produced the comeback of the day to win one up and grab a vital point for Bedfordshire.

So with three matches left on course we needed a point and a half to secure victory.

Scott Armitage gave us the point, with another two up win, that made sure we could not lose the match.

It was only fitting that Team Captain Paul Kenna, out at seven, managed to walk off the last all square to gain the half point for victory. Harry Boyle out last also took his match to the last for a half so over all a great 7-5 win for Bedfordshire.

With eight of the twelve matches going to the last hole this really was a great match to be involved in. Great credit must go to Essex for playing their part.

This was one of the best team performances I have seen in the five years I have been involved with the Bedfordshire first team with every player scoring, a hole in one and some fantastic golf.

Our thanks again go to everyone at The Millbrook Golf Club for hosting this event for us and looking after us so well.

Dave Weedon.

Team Manager.
