Our last league match of this season was played on Wednesday 24th August at Caddington Golf Club. The morning started with grey skies, but eventually developed into a very pleasant day with the breeze strengthening in the afternoon.
The Caddington course was in great condition, and received much praise from players and officials. The Golf Club, the Staff and the members were first class in their hospitality, and treatment of the visiting teams.
Bedfordshire U16`s had their first win of the season, beating Middlesex 8½ -3½ , to take revenge for the 7-5 loss at Fulwell G.C. the week before. The team lost 8-4 to Hertfordshire, who were League Champions for the fifth successive year, since the introduction of the Mike Amos Trophy.
This 8-4 loss is the best result we have had against Hertfordshire in my two years as manager. We scored extremely well in the morning foursomes, beating Middlesex 3½ -½ , and halving 2-2 with Herts, with the two lost matches, both being lost on the last hole, 1 down.
I have had problems all season in being able to field our strongest possible teams, and this last match had the added problem of the John O`Gaunt Open being held on the same day. I only had 1 county squad player, who had already signed up for the Open, choosing to play for the county team instead. I thank him very much for his decision. I wish to thank and congratulate, Harry Noton, Jay Luc-Farr and Ryan Hodges for representing Bedfordshire in all our friendly and league matches. Thanks also to Jack Turner for all his help, and for arranging for Jamie Day, a Caddington Junior member, to make up our team on Wednesday. Jamie was not in the season coaching squad, and was playing his first representative game for Bedfordshire, at his home club. For me, Jamie was the player of the day with two wins in the foursomes, with partner Jack Turner, and coming from 5 down in both singles matches, to beat Middlesex 1 up, and getting to only 2 down against Hertfordshire, before finally losing 3 and 1. A great fighting spirit in his first match.
I wish to thank Clive Allen and Stuart Goode for their terrific support, and particular thanks to Dave Underwood, for his hard work and dedication, in not only supporting me and my boys, but in all the junior age groups. We have a good team that works well for each other.
Thank you to Maurice Campbell and Richard Lally, our squad coaches. If the boys really take on board the information these guys have armed them with, practice the routines, and work hard at the skills tests set them, we should do better next year.
Thank you to all parents and guardians. Without your early morning and late night help, much of what we do would not be possible.
Thank you all.
Dave Oliver.
