Bedfordshire Colts v Hertfordshire Colts.

Saturday 4th May saw the first league fixture of the season at a very impressive Luton Hoo golf club. After a spell of great weather the morning caught a few people out being cold and windy, tough conditions for the 7107 yards that lay ahead.

Matt Hill and Nick Cunningham lead the way for Bedfordshire and never looked in trouble; a solid performance took the first point 5-4.

Sam Flannery and Craig Lefcovitch went out second and for the large part of the round were ahead but a late rally from the Hertfordshire pairing took the point 2 up.

Jack Leek and Alex Bithrey’s early dominance put them in a great position winning three of the first four holes and they never looked back taking their match 4-2.

Gary Munro and Matt Howarth, playing his first county fixture, went out at four and for the large part held their own but as the match progressed the Hertfordshire pair pulled away finally winning 3-2.

The foursomes provided some solid golf from both sides but shot of the morning went to Nick Cunningham who almost holed his tee shot on the monster 271 yard Par 3 thirteenth hole.

With the score 2-2 at lunch both sides were reasonably happy with all to play for in the afternoon.

At lunch we had stressed the need for some early wins to get momentum moving with us and Sam Flannery leading the way did just that, a very impressive round of golf took him to a 4-3 win.

Gary Munro at two also never looked troubled and progressed steadily to a 3-1 win and another point for Bedfordshire, but not such good news followed with Matt Howarth going down 6-5 and Matt Hill 5-4 so all was soon level 2-2- in the singles.

Nick Cunningham and Craig Lefcovitch battled hard and it looked at one point as though they may take something from their game, but both came up short going down 2-1 and with those two results our chances of taking something from the match diminished.

Jack Leek had lost his game 5-4 which just left Alex Bithrey in the final match to salvage some personal pride which he achieved winning his game 3-1.

The middle games just did not go our way and a strong Hertfordshire team took the match 7-5.

To put the fixture into perspective, however, it was a much better performance than the Colts side managed last year. The signs look good for the next couple of years, with some strongly emerging players, who once moulded into a team, will compete with all counties. We all look forward to our next fixture on August 11th v Essex at Beadlow Manor Golf Club.
