On Sunday 11th August Bedfordshire hosted Essex on the Baron course at Beadlow Manor Golf Club

The foursomes got under way in perfect conditions - it was pleasantly warm with a slight breeze, Bedfordshire again fielded a very young side with three players making their debut for the Colts.

Bradley Finch and Richard Hill led the way for Bedfordshire providing the best start possible. They never really looking like they were going to do anything other than win their game and win they did 3-1. No such luck in the remaining foursomes’ matches, however. The regular pairing of Alex Bithrey and Sam Flannery never really recovered from losing two of their first three holes, and finally lost 2-1. Alex Harris and Jack Hawksby had a good battle, the match going one way then the other but the Essex boys seemed to hit another gear towards the end taking the match 3-1. Jack Leek and Luke Charnley played in the final game, another tight affair and again going Essex’s way at the end another 2-1 defeat.

Although 3-1 down, every one had played reasonable golf, the Essex’s lads experience just seemed to show when required. The afternoon singles kicked off with Bedfordshire needing a fast start if we were going to take anything from the game, but as it transpired it was Essex that got off to a flier. With Bradley Finch going down 4-3, Richard Hill 2-1 and Alex Harris 5-4, Bedfordshire found themselves three down in the singles and 6-1 down overall. The best we could do now was to take the last five games for an unlikely draw. For a brief time this was on the cards with Bedfordshire leading in all five matches but again we fell just short of gaining the draw. Alex Bithrey, Jack Leek and Jack Hawksby all battled hard to take their games 2-1. Luke Charnley, knowing how important his game was, showed great fighting spirit against a very good Essex player but could not quite hold on, finally losing 2-1. Although the match result was decided, Sam Flannery, in the last game, went the distance, finally winning on the eighteenth 1up.

Final result Essex 7 Bedfordshire 5

For the second time this season the Bedfordshire Colts lost 7-5 but again a good performance, the fight and determination showed by all players showing how much they want to win for their county. Congratulations to Richard Hill, Jack Hawksby and Luke Charnley who were all making their debut for the Colts. Thanks to Beadlow Manor for hosting this fixture.
