Bedfordshire County Golf

Eastern Inter Counties Foursomes

2013 was a year of change at the Eastern Inter Counties Foursomes as far as Bedfordshire was concerned. Only half the team had played in this annual event at Seacroft Golf Club before and 5 young players were drafted in to give them valuable experience and to try to build for the future.

The players selected were Nick Cunningham, Sam Flannery, Matt Hill, Niall Johnston, Paul Kenna, Jack Leek, Miguel Moitas, Gary Munro, Chris Spooner and Rob Sutton.

Saturday morning’s points total of 3½ was disappointing, but things got worse in the afternoon where we only managed 2 more points. We were at that stage in eighth place but a massive 11½ points behind the leaders Cambridgeshire. The team were very positive on Saturday evening, however, and the pairings were left unaltered – only the order of play was changed – and everyone was focussed on an improved performance.

Sadly, Sunday morning was our worst session as we only managed 1½ points but this was perhaps explained in part by the fact that a player was feeling unwell and had to leave the course and concede 2 matches. We had travelled without a reserve this year, so County President Clive Allen was hurriedly drafted in to play on the final afternoon. This turned out to be our most successful session of the weekend! We won 6½ points to give us a final total of 13½ to leave us with the Wooden Spoon.

At this level there is actually little between the players. They all strike the ball very well and it mostly seems to come down to missing a few crucial up and downs or putts. The youngsters in our team did not look out of place and things look good for the future. Thanks of course go to Clive Allen for standing in on the final afternoon, and to Team Manager, Dave Weedon for all his hard work, both before and during the weekend.

Many congratulations to the team from our neighbours Cambridgeshire who played very well to hold off the resurgent Lincolnshire who came back very strongly on the Sunday in an effort to retain the title.

We look forward to improving our result next year.
