Bedfordshire County Golf

County & Colts Championships

The County and Colts Championships were held at The Millbrook Golf Club over the weekend of 8th & 9th June 2013. The host club had worked tremendously hard in the run up to the Championships and the course was presented in very good condition. It proved a great test for the players playing from the very back (blue) tees and they were very complimentary about the course, the catering and the organisation of the event.

The Bedfordshire County Champion for the second year running was Robert Sutton (Dunstable Downs) who again beat Miguel Moitas (South Beds) into second place. He won by the comparatively comfortable margin of 5 shots this year, with a 4 round total of 300 and will go forward to represent the County at the Champion of Champions weekend at Woodhall Spa in September. Many congratulations on a successful defence of his title and we all wish him well at Woodhall.

There was a really good entry this year from the Colts, and Jack Hawksby from the home club (Millbrook) was our 2013 Colts Champion. The Colts Championship was much tighter than the men's with Jack shooting a gross 305 to win by just 1 shot from Mathew Hill (Leighton Buzzard). This was a tremendous result for young Jack who is only 15 years old and it surely heralds a good future for him.

The County Team Champions, which is decided on the individual scores from the Saturday rounds only, were the team of Robert Sutton, Mark Carter and Paul Kenna representing Dunstable Downs. They will represent Dunstable Downs at the English Team Championships at Dudsbury Golf Club in September and we, of course, wish them every success.

County President, Clive Allen, made presentations to all the winners mentioned, plus vouchers to the runners up, those in third place and handicap prizes for AM and PM on the Saturday. He thanked the host Club, their greenstaff, members and clubroom staff for hosting a very successful Championships, and also the many volunteer ball spotters, starters David Underwood and Mike Smith, and Chief Referee Mike Smith.

Thank you Millbrook.

We now forward to next years Championships on 7th & 8th June at Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club as part of their Centenary celebrations.
