Bedfordshire County Golf

Seniors Qualifier

This is an annual qualifier contested by Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk to provide a winner to progress to the Southern Finals in the Autumn. for the Fortunately we were able to have a practice round at Ipswich on the Sunday prior to the event as it was looking as though this would never be possible. However, it was and it proved to be very valuable to us – well at least in the first round.

The event was hosted by Suffolk and a very good job they did indeed on the day. The weather was absolutely baking – which was better than absolutely raining. This event is a ten man team and this year it really was a 36 hole event as we changed the format from previous years – and this proved to be successful. However, there may be some slight amendments to the event next year, but it will still be a 36 hole event.  In hot weather 36 holes of competitive golf can prove to be draining especially for senior golf.

We were drawn against Norfolk in the morning and the team put up a great performance providing a result of four wins and one halved match – revenge for our pasting in the friendly against Norfolk earlier in the year. This put us in first position at the end of the morning round, half a point ahead of Suffolk.

In the afternoon we were drawn against Suffolk – the strongest of all the teams – but unfortunately they were too good for us and we went down 5 – 0. We only needed 3 points from the afternoon matches to qualify for the final – but this was not to be despite courageous efforts from all of us.

The day finished with a lovely meal and we all set off back to Beds about 8.15pm. My thanks once again to Gordon Fuller for coming all the way up to Ipswich just to support the team. Results from the match against Norfolk can be found here, and Suffolk here.
