Sussex win Junior Foursomes

The Sussex team - pictured above - won the England Golf, South East Group Junior Foursomes title at Dunstable Downs yesterday (20th August). Nine Counties were represented at the two day Championship where the counties all play each other in a series of triangular foursomes matches. Dunstable Downs and Bedfordshire were proud to host this long standing event which showcases some of the best young golfers in England, and Dunstable Downs did us proud with excellent hospitality. The course was in excellent condition and the weather was kind with, for Dunstable Downs, only a relatively light wind.

There are eleven Counties in the South East Group but this format only lends itself to a maximum of nine Counties, so as well as trying to win the event all Counties try hard not to finish in the bottom two places. The two Counties who finish 8th & 9th are 'relegated' from next years event and are replaced by the two Counties who missed out this year - Middlesex and Suffolk. This ensures a very keen edge to all matches.

Sussex were very strong competitiors over all four sessions, but Bedfordshire did extremely well to finish the first day in joint second place and hopes were high on day two. The young team did very well on the second morning but were up against the eventual winners Sussex in the final series of matches which was tough. The Bedfordshire team eventually finished fourth in the table ahead of the larger Counties Surrey, Essex Hampshire, Hertfordshire and Norfolk. It is encouraging to note that all but one of our team will still be under 18 and eligible to play again next year at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club in Suffolk. Individual match results and the final league table can be found via this link.

Congratulations to all the team and their Manager, Pete Busbridge. We look forward to next year.
