County Championships
This years County & Colts Championships were held over the weekend of 7th & 8th June 2014 at Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club, as part of the host Club's Centenary Celebrations.
The course was presented in superb condition for the competitors, but, unfortunately, the weather on the first morning was very wet. After several hours of persistent rain the greens were becoming waterlogged but, with help from Club volunteers and County Officials who worked hard to squeegee the worst greens, play was able to continue and the morning round was completed, albeit a little late. The rain duly relented and gave way to warm sunshine and a light, drying wind. 24 players made the 36 hole cut and were due back the following day with three players tied for the lead on 3 over par - Mat Hill, Leighton Buzzard, Paul Kirkwood, South Beds and Gary Munro, Bedfordshire.
In a change to the previous format, only 18 holes remained to be played on the Sunday with this final round played after the first round of the County Handicap Championships.
Mat Hill played well to record another level par round of 71 which was enough to finish 4 shots ahead of Paul Kirkwood who finished as runner up one shot ahead of Gary Munro. Congratulations to Mat Hill who is pictured below with the County Championship Trophy which has been competed for since 1923.

The Colts Championship is run alongside the County Championships and 19 players who were under 21 on 1st January 2014 entered, with 13 of them making the 36 hole cut. Mat Hill is in his last year as a Colt but as he won the main County Championship, the winner of the Colts Championship was Alex Bithry from South Beds.

The team championship is played over the first 36 holes where teams of 3 players gross scores are aggregated and the lowest wins. The winners for 2014 who will be invited to enter the Champion Club tournament were South Beds represented by Paul Kirkwood, Luke Charnley and Alex Bithrey.
