County & Colts Championships

Bedford and County Golf Club, in their centenary year, hosted a succesful County and Colts Championships. Their course was presented in wonderful condition and members and staff were most accomodating and are thanked for being such great hosts.

Held over the weekend of 9th & 10th June, 42 of the best golfers in the County battled very strong winds in the first round and the difficult conditions were reflected in the scores. The wind eased a little in the afternoon and with the scores improving 21 players made the cut into day 2. Defending Champion, Miguel Moitas (South Beds) with a two round score of 141 held a narrow one shot overnight lead over Rob Sutton (Dunstable Downs) with Mark Carter (Dunstable Downs) four shots back. These three players were grouped together for rounds 3 & 4 on a Sunday which was pleasantly warm, and with little or no wind score continued to improve. Mark Carter had a wonderful third round, shooting a 66 - the low round of the weekend - to overturn the defecit and take a two shot lead into round 4.

These three players continued their fine play into the afternoon with both Rob and Miguel shooting 68's to Mark's 71. This made Rob Sutton the Bedfordshire County Champion for 2012 by one shot.

In the Colts Championships, Blane Breheny (South Beds) led by one shot going into the last round from Mat Hill (Leighton Buzzard). Mat played the steadier golf in the afternoon, however, with a controlled 72 whilst Blane slipped to a 75 which made Mat Hill the Colts Champion with an aggregate score of 294. Jack Leek (The Millbrook) shot the low Colts round of the weekend (69) to pip Blane on countback for the runners up spot with both players on 296.
