Bedfordshire County Golf

Seniors Foursomes Preliminary

The foursomes event this year was hosted by The Cambridgeshire Union and was held at Gog Magog Golf Club on the Old Course on 10th July. Teams of 10 players from Beds, Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge Area took part.  Weather for the day was pretty good so that was a great help. Bedfordshire were drawn against Suffolk, and Norfolk drew Cambridgeshire Area.  Unfortunately we were not able to ‘do the biz’ against Suffolk and lost by 3 ½ to 1 ½ . However, if we had actually got just one point from the first three matches then we would have probably qualified for the afternoon final. Unfortunately we didn’t, despite our best efforts and some great golf from the Suffolk guys. It can be so frustrating for us all when we nearly make it but just fall short. It is certainly not for lack of effort by us all, I can assure everyone.

In the other qualifying match, Norfolk took on hosts Cambridgeshire Area but the hosts proved too strong and went on to play Suffolk in the final in the afternoon.  Once again this was a tough match and Suffolk came through as winners and go on to represent our region in the finals. We wish them great success in the finals.

Unfortunately, there is nothing for the losing teams to play for in the afternoon so it is a somewhat waste of time but the Norfolk team and ourselves decided to just play 9 holes just to pass the time whilst waiting for the other two counties to complete their pm matches. It would be really good if a formula for the losing a.m. teams could be found.

Once again I would like to thank our team for their efforts and hope that we can be more successful next year. My thanks also go to Gordon Fuller for coming and supporting the team – it was good to see such support.

Peter Jones, County Seniors Captain
