Skevington Salver

Teams of eight players from Bedfordshire, Essex, Norfolk & Suffolk played for the Skevington Salver at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club on Monday 23rd July. The course was in great condition, and, unusually this season, the weather was glorious with not a cloud in the sky - a wonderful day for golf.

The players responded and after the morning 9 holes, Bradley Finch (Aylesbury Vale Golf Club) who shot a superb 32 (4 under) held a narrow 1 shot lead from Mitchel Sarling (Essex). Both boys continued to play well in the afternoon with Bradley shooting 73 to Mitchel's 72 to leave them both tied on 105 and the competition rules specifying a play off! Bradley and Mitchel were both out early and had an anxious wait while the remaining competitors finished and had their cards checked. The sudden death play off began on the 10th hole with virtually all the other competitors and team officials watching. The plan was to play 10, 11 and 18 until a winner emerged but only one hole proved necessary as Mitchel won it with a birdie 3 to Bradley's par. Congratulations to Mitchel who won it well, but I stress Mitchel won it - Bradley didn't lose it!

The net prize winner was Jack Phillips from Suffolk and all three boys are pictured below with Bedfordshire Vice President, John Jones, who did the presentations.

Bedfordshire were also runners up in the inaugural Team Competition. This was introduced to keep all team members interested throughout the day, even though they may be out of contention for the scratch prize. It is decided by taking the best three gross scores, and then the best three from the reamining net scores. Given that the competition is played over 27 holes and players receive 1½ times their full handicap, ½ points become vital and it was by just a half of one point that Essex (658.5) beat Bedfordshire (659).
