Handicap Championship hit by the weather

The County Handicap Championship at Dunstable Downs Golf Club was held on Sunday 29th July, and like so many events at all levels this 'summer' it was hit by poor weather. The morning started well with the course in great condition and all looked good for the day. The wind had freshened during the morning, which is nothing unusual at the Downs, and the clouds were building but the early groups in the afternoon started in the dry. They were only a few holes into the afternoon round, however, when heavy rain accompanied by loud thunder and lightning meant the klaxons sounded and players were brought off the course for their safety.

The storm moved slowly away and play eventually resumed but the last groups did not tee off for their afternoon round until 3.45 which was some 90 minutes later than planned. Another storm approached, however, with more thunder and lightning looking possible, and those fears were realised with a very loud bang just before 4.30 pm so once again the klaxons sounded and players were brought off the course. Another 90 minute delay looked likely and it was decided that there was simply not enough time to complete the competition, therefore, and the results were declared on the morning 18 holes of golf.

The 2012 County Handicap Champion was Liam Dempsey (Caddington Golf Club) with a nett 68. Given that there were no 'am' & 'pm' winners, prizes were awarded to the frst 5 places for both the handicap and scratch scores.
