Report

On 6th August a 10 a-side Bedfordshire U’16s team travelled to play Essex at Toot Hill Golf Club in a friendly, set in the rural settings of the Essex countryside quoted as being a hidden gem and we were not disappointed. Whilst not the longest of courses just over 6,200 yards, the two tier greens were quick  making  the venue very challenging.

In the morning Foursomes the Beds Team adapted best to the immaculate conditions of the course, and with a very strong performance by all, went into Lunch 4  ½ to a ½ ahead.

The afternoon play became very eventful, with the Essex lads not going to lie down quietly, rallied well to win 4 out the first 5 single matches, so much so Charlie Mudd closed out his game against Beds Sam Flannery with a hole in 1 at the far from easy 15th par 3 with pin precariously positioned 15ft in front of the water’s edge.

Upon that wonderful strike an electric storm forced play to be suspended for a good hour, giving the Beds players the chance to re-stock and realise the match was very much in the balance. Once again to the course’s credit after the torrential downpour the course was still very playable.

The guys had to really dig in, and the ever reliable Alex Bithrey came up with the goods scoring a crucial point by holing a winning birdie putt on the final green, and with further victories from Ryan Hodges, Reece Blair and Harry Busbridge, Beds secured their deserved win 8 ½ matches to Essex 6 ½ .

All the boys were a credit to the county and themselves, and this victory will put us in good stead for the 2 league matches ahead.

I’d like to thank the Essex players for giving us a fine match, to the officials and Toot Hill Golf Club for their hospitality, making our visit all the more enjoyable.

Well Done Lads

Pete Busbridge  Team Manager U’16s
